One very important note when engine starts to emit blue smoke (especially if the owner are a moral driver and change oils / filters regularly) is to run compression test followed immediately by leak-down test (i.e. putting about 80 PSI compressed air into each individual cylinder while piston at TDC and check throttle body, exhaust tail pipe, coolant cap and engine oil cap. If leak down tester gauge goes to the green zone indicating that there are very minimal air leak, then most likely the cause of blue smoke are valve stem rubber seals specially if the car was not moved for a month or so. There are a method of changing valve stem seals without removing cylinder head but maybe for certain models its not applicable. If leak down test arrow goes to orange or red zone and if the air appears to leak through oil cap, it clearly indicate piston rings fault. Another indicator for piston rings is hard start specially when cold, no power, and blue smoke blow-by when opening the oil cap, in addition to low vacuum. Another note when making compression test is to put a spoon size oil into a cylinder with low compression so that if compression rise up aftrerward it means piston rings. In our Arab World, nobody makes such a precise diagnosis prior any engine operation, thus the best option in our Arab World is to change the engine with a one in good compression state or imported refurbished engine. Believe me if knowledgeable person changes his oils / filters regularity and take care of his car and drive very normal (never push the accelerator to floor) the engine will last forever, regardless of what I heard from Scotty Kilmer on some horrible stories about Chrysler, new Chevys and Nissan product that do not last like Toyotas. Take Care and Enjoy your Heaven. John Jack Kaplanian.
